Whether with firearms or motor vehicles,

there are two primary causes of accidents:

IGNORANCE and/or CARELESSNESS.

The intent throughout many of these pages is to eliminate both!

DO NOT necessarily depend on computer-generated maps by others to locate DCSA. Some are blatantly WRONG and can make you LATE for class - and unqualified for certification due to shortage of hours.

Along with some major utility work and Barnett Shale drilling traffic in our immediate vicinity, portions of Copper Canyon Road are scheduled for rebuilding, so the "landscape" as pictured may be somewhat different shortly.

DIRECTIONS:

PLEASE SCROLL TO PHOTOS AND TEXT BELOW

  FOR IMPORTANT LOCAL TRAFFIC DETAILS.

Busy, but often the most simple: From I-35E in north Lewisville: Go 5 miles west on FM 407 (Justin Road), then turn right onto Copper Canyon Rd.  DCSA is 1/2 mile north of FM 407 at 409 Copper Canyon Road. See photos below. Note: On "normal" weekday evenings around 5:30, expect it to take at least 20 to 30 minutes get from I-35's FM 407 exit ramp to DCSA.

Alternate route from I-35E in mid Lewisville:: Take FM 1171 west to FM 2499 (a.k.a. Long Prairie Road in Flower Mound), north on FM 2499 (Long Prairie Road) approx. 2 miles to FM 407 (Justin Road). Landmark: A new "Super Target" and "Chilis" are on the southwest corner of the intersection of 2499 and 407. From this intersection, go 1.5 miles west on FM 407, then 1/2 mile north to 409 Copper Canyon Road. See photos below.

Another alternate route from I-35E in mid Lewisville: Take "Valley Ridge" exit off I-35E. Go west on Valley Ridge through Lewisville and Flower Mound. Approximately 1/2 mile west of Marcus High School, turn right on FM 2499. Travel north for approximately 1/2 mile to traffic light at FM 407. Turn left onto FM 407 and go 1.5 miles west to Copper Canyon Road. Turn right (north) on Copper Canyon Road and go 1/2 mile, taking a left in third driveway on the left. See photos below.

From Grapevine Mills / DFW Airport area: Go 8 to 10 miles north on FM 2499 to FM 407 (Justin Road), 1.5 miles west on FM 407, then 1/2 mile north to 409 Copper Canyon Road. (See photos below.) Due to explosive growth in the area, drivers may expect a lot of "stop and go" traffic for at least the last few miles. On "normal" weekdays between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m., the 8 to10 miles mentioned above can often take at least 30 to 40 minutes.

From I-35W north of Texas Motor Speedway: Take FM 1171 east to FM 2499 (a.k.a. Long Prairie Road in Flower Mound), north on FM 2499 (Long Prairie Road) approx. 2 miles to FM 407 (Justin Road), 1.5 miles west on FM 407, then 1/2 mile north to 409 Copper Canyon Road. See photos below. (Those who look at a map may discover a slightly shorter route by turning north off 1171 a little sooner and coming through Double Oak on a narrow, snaky road, then turning east on 407 at a 4-way stop sign in Bartonville. Beware that Double Oak cops are very intolerant of drivers who blow their stop signs, curves, hills and speed limits.)

Residents of Denton and Corinth who are familiar with the Old Alton Bridge can now use the adjacent new bridge to drive south on Copper Canyon Road. (Not suggested after dark unless you have used the route before.) Drivers coming from the north during the day will be able to see an adjacent 150' tower well in advance. See photos below.

"Should Know" Info. for All Drivers Coming from FM 407:

When traveling north on Copper Canyon Road, be advised that MURPHY IS ALIVE AND THRIVES at the first curve (approximately 4/10 mile north of FM 407). Especially when wet, the County's preceding 15 MPH speed advisory sign is there for a reason, as are subsequent signs at DCSA.

As of June 11, 2008 DCSA again has two open driveways available to north-bounders. DO activate your left turn signal as soon as you come around the curve in the photo above. You will then see the signs and the driveway in the photo below. You can turn left into the driveway pictured below or the next driveway on your left. Before turning left into the either driveway, be especially vigilant for speeding vehicles or crotch rockets coming around the next curve.

Directions for SOUTH-BOUNDERS on Copper Canyon Road:

The DCSA driveway (in photo above) is likely most convenient for south-bounders.  If you miss it and the next one, DO NOT attempt to turn around in the tower driveway adjacent to the next blind curve !!!

ARRIVAL, PARKING & DEPARTURE

Parking lot coordinates:

N 33 04.771'

W 097 06.575'

If you are arriving as a pre-registered student  - and if the area is dry - please try to park on the grass facing Copper Canyon Road so that those who will not be staying as long can park as shown in the photo below.

However, if it has rained recently - or if rain is imminent - please remain on graveled areas only and angle park initially along the third base line (pictured above).  A range officer or instructor may often drop the rope gate and ask some pre-registered students to park on one of several graveled areas inside.  If you are asked to park inside, upon departure, you may be directed to slowly follow one of the the gravel paths to a specific exit driveway.

Please try not to park directly in front of the sign/registration form boxes or directly in front of the drop box so that  FIRST-TIME VISITORS can locate them more easily.

Upon departure, definitely observe the "STOP" sign at the middle driveway and check the curves   carefully for speeding cars and/or motorcycles.

Unfortunately, some individuals in sports cars, pickups and SUVs also use Copper Canyon Road as a personal racetrack, to "push the envelope".  Murphy, the briars and/or barbed wire sometimes get them before the cops or ambulances do, but do not help them get there!!!
