Rental Handguns The following handguns (not necessarily on site) may be available by appointment by recent DCSA students only or Freedom Plan members who may want to "try before buying" (elsewhere; such as via DCSA members Ellen and Richard MacDonald of Highland Village; see http://northtexasarms.com/cart/). This option often allows those who are contemplating the purchase of a new handgun to spend $50 or $100 testing one or two "primary candidates" before spending $500 to $1,000 on a handgun they might or might not be happy with ... Pricing not shown can vary greatly with the particular handgun(s) selected, training needed, maintenance requirements, current cost of ammunition, etc. If interested, please send an e-mail with details of specific interest to Lonnie at dcsa1996@yahoo.com. Semi-Automatics Any one of the first four 9mm semi-automatic "work horses" (including range time, two B-27 targets and 50 rounds of ammo and sales tax) can typically be provided for "consciously competent" pistol people for a total of $50 each (where applicable, with one free change out of back strap). 1. Glock 19 (Compact 9mm) http://www.glock.com/english/index_pistols.htm
2. Kahr K-9 (all steel 9mm with Elite Trigger) http://www.kahr.com/PA-1_9mm_k.html
3. Smith & Wesson M&P Compact 9 mm (interchangeable back straps/night sights, ambidextrous magazine latch) www.smith-wesson.com
4. Springfield XD 9(M) (full size with interchangeable back straps, ambidextrous magazine release) http://www.the-m-factor.com/
June 23, 2009 update: Also now available, yet not photographed is Springfield XD-9 subcompact. 5. Ruger LCP .380 (with Crimson Trace laser). Well experienced, especially muzzle conscious, non-recoil sensitive shooters only. $50.00 including 25 rounds, range time, one B-27 target and sales tax. http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/FAFamily?type=Pistol&subtype=Centerfire%20Autoloading&famlst=64
6. Kahr PM-9 (polymer micro 9mm with night sights). Pretty snappy. Not necessarily for the recoil-sensitive. $50.00 including 25 rounds, range time, one B-27 target and sales tax. http://www.kahr.com/PA-1_9mm_pm.html
7. Colt Gold Cup, Series 70 .45 ACP http://www.coltsmfg.com/cmci/Series70.asp As of late June 2009, this pistol may be going back to it's original owner shortly, possibly to be replaced in the future with a 3" barrel 1911.
8. Beretta U22 Neos INOX. Ultra-modern .22 Long Rifle Semi-Automatic with 6" barrel. Low noise, low recoil, excellent for novice training. https://www.shopberetta.com (picture not presently available) Revolvers The first five revolvers below are likely of most interest to CHL students who are considering 5-shot revolvers such as Model 642 Revolver - Crimson Trace® Lasergrip SKU: 163811) or (the much heavier) Model 60 Revolver - 2 1/8" (SKU: 162420). Students reviewing these pages should take note of the weight of each of the guns as well as the grip size, bearing in mind that for every action (recoil) there is an opposite and equal reaction. Any one of the first five revolvers (including range time, one B-27 target and 25 rounds of .38 Special ammo and sales tax) can typically be provided for testing for a total cost of $50 per gun. If applicable, an additional B-27 target and .38+P or .357 ammunition sometimes possible at $5.00 per 5 rounds. 1. Smith & Wesson Model 36 (all steel j-frame: approx. 20.4 ounces) www.smith-wesson.com (original vintage of SKU: 150184).
2. Smith & Wesson Model 637 (15 ounce j-frame) www.smith-wesson.com similar to SKU: 163050. For most people, no room for little finger. Exposed metal back strap on these quite light guns can, for many people, put in the category of "made to carry, not to shoot". The revolver pictured below has been sold and replaced with (an internal hammer) Ruger LCR. See http://www.ruger-firearms.com/LCR/index.html
3. Smith & Wesson Model 637 (15 ounce j-frame) www.smith-wesson.com similar to SKU: 163050. As pictured below, fitted with Crimson Trace Model 305 Laser Grip (for most people, room for little finger). Compared to same 637 revolver above (2) with grip with exposed back strap, more pleasant to shoot.
4. Smith & Wesson Model 340 PD (12 ounce j-frame with Crimson Trace overmoulded laser grip). Original version of SKU: 163061 www.smith-wesson.com. As pictured below, fitted with Crimson Trace Model 405 Laser Grip (for most people, no room for little finger).
5. Ruger SP-101 38/357 3" barrel, spurred hammer, Pachmeyer aftermarket grip. Similar aftermarket grips available for all S&W revolvers in photos above. http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/FAFamily?type=Revolver&subtype=Double%20Action&famlst=9
6. Harrington & Richardson 999 6" barrel, 9-shot .22LR
7. North American Arms .22 Mini Mag Convertible http://www.naaminis.com/magnum.html
8. Ruger Super Redhawk .454 Casull /.45 Colt (7 1/2" barrel with Burris 2-7X Scope) http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/FAProdView?model=5505&return=Y
