Private 101 and CHL classes are available on weekdays or evenings (sometimes on weekends) for groups, couples or individuals. If interest, please read at least the rest of this page, then e-mail Lonnie at dcsa1996@yahoo.com with preferred time(s) and date(s).  It is also often important to elaborate a bit on experience (or not), firearms owned and personal objectives.

The class as described on this page is frequently completed on a privately scheduled basis. These private (approximately 6 hours with 1 or 2 students) "101" classes can be scheduled for a flat fee of $200.00 plus $31.88 per student for 1 or 2 students. With 3 or more students, private 101 classes are typically $131.88 per student, with time requirements at least an additional hour for each student more than two.

With "Option A" (described below) Students will have the option of completing another 9 hours of scheduled Concealed Handgun License "Classroom Training" at DCSA at cost of $90 before or after this "101" class.

The primary objective of this course is for novice or inexperienced students to obtain the initial knowledge, skills and attitude to safely and responsibly own and operate a revolver or semi-automatic pistol.

The first hour of the class is DCSA's generic safety orientation. Thereafter, the focus shifts to types of handgun ammunition, parts, operation and the fundamentals of marksmanship. The last segment of the "classroom session" and/or the first portion of a subsequent "individualized" 90-minute segment includes "hands on" work with special inert training rounds before going to the range with live ammunition.

The fees above (within the Eventbrite software) includes an "Option A" of approximate 4 1/2 hour classroom segment (including 1-hour safety orientation), eye and ear protection, initial membership and range use fee and a subsequent 90-minute/100-round shooting session on multiple targets - with no more than one other student shooting at the same time.

"Option A" is geared primarily for those with aspirations for the Texas Concealed Handgun License. With advance notice, a gun cleaning session can be sometimes be scheduled immediately after students' shooting segment for an additional cost of $60, including supplies and an 11-ounce can of Safaria Charlie for the student to take home.

"Option B" is possible for those who would like to use their individualized shooting segment focusing on a specific handgun, shooting only about 50 rounds, then coming back to the classroom to learn how to disassemble and and clean the specific handgun. (If a semi-automatic, be sure to bring owner's manual or obtain disassembly and reassembly instructions online.) Unlike Option A above, this Option B is not necessarily geared for those more promptly seeking the CHL.

"Option C" (with the +$40 guns and ammo option) is a possibility for those who want to shoot up a total of 60 rounds to "try out" up to 4 of the following 5 small "carry guns": Semi-automatics: Kahr PM-9, Ruger LC-9, Ruger LCP. Revolvers: Smith and Wesson Model 637, Ruger LCR.  After "Option A" students have some experience with larger handguns, this Option C shooting segment typically takes scheduling for about an additional hour, with an additional cost of $100.  Due to the short sight radius, light weight and increased recoil of most of these smaller guns, this Option C is NOT recommended initially for beginning shooters. If interest, e-mail Lonnie at dcsa1996@yahoo.com with mention of this "Option C", your contact info and details of your circumstances.

"Option D" has been added here especially for use with certain private classes. It typically includes minimal focus on or shooting of .22 handguns and is geared for kids and/or adults with interest in recreational rifle shooting and/or  preparation for Appleseed rifle clinics. With the +$40 guns and ammo option, students shoot up to 200 rounds of premium CCI ammo through one or more of the following .22 rifles: (1) Scoped Savage bolt action single shot with child-length stock, (2) Winchester Model 67 bolt action single shot, (3) Marlin semi-automatic carbine with "Tech Sights", (4) Scoped Ruger 10/22, (5) Scoped Ruger 10/22 bull barrel target model. If interest, e-mail Lonnie at dcsa1996@yahoo.com with mention of this "Option D", your contact info. and details of your circumstances.

Students may bring their own handgun (of virtually any caliber) and (factory) ammunition. (Winchester 100-round "Value Pack" at Wal-Mart is often the best buy in at least .380 and 9mm.)

"Option A" students will have the option of renting/trying one, two, three or all four of the following four semi-automatics pistols for a total of $40, including 100 rounds of 9mm ammunition. (The first 50 rounds are typically used during training and student's personal evaluation of which gun "feels" the best, then the last 50 rounds are used in the "shooting test" with the most favored gun of the four.)

Kahr Lady K-9

Springfield XD-9-M (interchangeable back straps, ambidextrous magazine release)

Glock 19

Smith & Wesson M&P Compact (interchangeable back straps, ambidextrous slide latch)

If desired, a subsequent "102" shooting session can be arranged (such as Option C above) or on an hourly basis for students to sample various smaller (and often more difficult to shoot) "carry guns" as described in the photos below and on the "Rentals" page (plus a new Ruger LC-9 not shown there).

For "Option A" students, based upon *mutual student/instructor discretion at the time, there will be possibility for the last 50 rounds of the 100-round shooting session to include the DPS CHL course "Demonstration of Proficiency".

* Note: This Texas CHL "shooting qualification" requires a minimum of 32 caliber. Students who test with a revolver will be issued a license to carry only revolvers (of any caliber). Students who test with a semi-automatic will be issued a license good for either a semi-automatic pistol or a revolver. Past experience indicates that most students (for license versatility) want to focus initially on a semi-automatic handgun, sometimes scheduling another private session to actually take the DPS shooting test with a semi-automatic and/or to return get some "hands on" work with a revolver.

A .22 Beretta Neos semi-automatic pistol is also available for younger shooters. (The Neos possibly to be replaced soon with a Sig Mosquito.)
